Brief description:

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow a training programme in Belgium. In short training programmes, lasting one to four months, the focus is on transferring skills rather than knowledge, thus creating opportunities for cooperation and networking.

•  International Training Programme in Dairy Technology, from Rural to Industrial Level

•  Political Economy of the Great Lakes: Towards inclusive Development

•  Scientific and Technological Information Management in Universities and Libraries: an Active Training Environment 10 (Stimulate 10)

•  Technology for Integrated Water Management

Number of Awards:

Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 70 scholarships to training participants.

Target group:

Residents and nationals of the following countries are eligible for a VLIR-UOS scholarship:

Africa
Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Asia
Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Palestinian Administered Areas, Philippines, Vietnam

Latin America
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru, Surinam

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The scholarships cover all related expenses.

Eligibility/Admission Requirements:

Applicants applying both for academic admission and for a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements to the and the scholarship criteria. Applicants should therefore refer to the websites of the participating Training Programmes for specific eligibility/admission requirements.

Scholarship Criteria:

Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection but relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the country are the most important academic selection criteria.

Application instructions:

The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications.  The host university – not the applicant – forwards the applications for a scholarship to the VLIR-UOS secretariat after the academic admission.

The academic admission procedure are specific for every programme.  It is important to visit the main website (links found above) of  the specific Training Programme you have chosen for detailed information on how to apply for this scholarship.  Detailed steps on how to apply for the scholarship is found at this page.

Deadline for scholarships application to the Training Programme is 1 February 2010 except for the training about Governing for Development which falls on 30 November 2009.
