Course description:

The interdisciplinary field of Peace and Social Justice Studies focuses on practical questions of how to realize peace and justice in the everyday world. The University is concerned with building peace with justice locally: with families, communities and organizations, and it also strives to reduce injustice and build peace nationally and internationally. Through classes, programs and interactions, PSJ students and faculty seek to:

• understand, respond, and reduce conflict on both individual and social levels
• develop approaches to and methods for prevention and resolution of war, genocide, terrorism, and violations of human rights and
• contribute to the development of social systems and societies that promote peace with social justice.

Entry Requirements:

Admission to Berea College is academically competitive. The University has a limited number of spaces in each year’s entering class, so we are looking for students who have strong academic potential and financial need.

Most of admitted students score between 20 and 30 on the ACT (or SAT equivalent) and have a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.0 in a strong college prep curriculum. Students may take either the ACT or SAT.

The University also considers other factors such as community service, leadership qualities, and levels of motivation. The University strongly recommends the following high school curriculum:

• Four (4) units of English (including composition, rhetoric, and literature)
• Three (3) units of Mathematics (at least Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry)
• Two (2) units of Laboratory Science
• Two (2) units of Social Science/History (including World History)
• Two (2) units of a foreign language
