Study online for free at the University of the People

The University of the People (UoPeople) is the world’s first tuition-free, online academic institution dedicated to the global advancement and democratization of higher education.
The institution follows a high-quality, low-cost and global model which embraces the worldwide presence of the Internet.
Their aim is to bring collegiate level studies to even the poorest and most remote places on earth.
The Classroom
With a convenient virtual address, www.uopeople.org, the University of the People is accessible anywhere a computer and Internet connection exists.
Your Classmates
The University of the People anticipates tens of thousands of students from different countries to enroll within the first five years of their operation, although enrollment will be capped at 300 students in the first batch or cycle. The students and professors represent a diverse group coming from both under-developed and developed countries.
The Curriculum
The University of the People offers a unique learning experience in two programs:
- -Business Administration
- -Computer Science
The curriculum includes lessons, classes, discussions, readings, assignments and exams like any university. The students receive maximum freedom in location and hours. Still, in order to push the students for success in the final exam the institution makes use of several tools to ensure the students’ commitment, and promote their knowledge.
The Degree
University of the People is not yet an accredited institution. The University of the People intends to apply for accreditation and for authorization from recognized agencies and authorities in accordance with the rules, regulations and timelines of said agencies and authorities.
Currently, the University of the People does not confer degrees. The current program offers a new learning experience similar to academic studies towards four degrees; An Associate and BSc in Computer Science and an Associate and BA in Business Administration.
School Year
Registration for the first batch ended last June 30 but it will open again on January 2010.
Tuition fees
As a non-profit institution, the University of the People offers tuition-free academic programs. The University does not charge students to take classes. Readings and other study materials will be available online free of charge. The institution only charges a minimal registration fee (from $15 to $50 based on the student’s country of residence) and exam fee (from $10 to $100 per exam based on the student’s country of residence).
