Brief description:
Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards (DHPA) is a UK scheme to bring outstanding students from India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and the developing world to come and study for PhDs in top rated UK research facilities. The initiative was launched by the Prime Minister In November 2003.
Host Institution(s):
Selected Universities in UK. Each recipient university has a point of contact who is responsible for the Dorothy Hodgkin scheme at that institution. Contact points are available from the EPSRC website here.
Field of study:
Science & Technology, Engineering, Medicine, Social Sciences
Number of Awards:
Not specified.
Target group:
DHPAs are open to top-quality science, engineering, medicine, social science and technology student nationals from India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and the developing world, as defined by the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD. For a full list of eligible countries please go to the OECD website. The eligible countries are all those on the list, plus Russia and Hong Kong.
Scholarship value/inclusions:
Each DHPA is valued at £90,000. The PhD scholarship covers a period of three to four years, at an average annual cost per student of £30,000 primarily to cover fees and maintenance.
Eligibility:
Recipient universities are required to ensure that the students they accept hold a high-grade qualification, at least the equivalent of a UK first class honours degree, from a prestigious academic institution. These students should be considered to be the ‘best of the best’ (for example, candidates should be demonstrably in the top 20 per cent of PhD candidates).
Students are selected in accordance with the university’s own postgraduate admission requirements.
Application instructions:
There are no set application forms or deadlines for DHPA – application procedures will vary between universities, and each university will have its own processes and deadlines. However, in general, most universities will expect you to apply (and subsequently be accepted) for a PhD place at the university before you can be considered for DHPA funding. In other words, applying for DHPA funding is in additionto the need to apply for your PhD place.
Students wishing to be considered for DHPAs should apply to the universities directly, rather than applying to either EPSRC or RCUK. Each recipient university will receive a grant, with funds for the number of DHPAs that it has been awarded.
Each recipient university has identified a point of contact, (either a bespoke URL or e-mail address) which will allow you to access further details about applying for DHPA funding at that particular university. Since recipient universities will follow their own application and recruitment procedures, any deadline imposed will be a matter for the universities, rather than for either EPSRC or RCUK.
It is important to visit the official website (link found below) for detailed information on how to apply for this scholarship.
Contact information:
Students wanting to apply for DHPA funding should contact individual recipient universities, using the contact points provided, rather than sending applications to EPSRC or RCUK.
