Brief description:
Established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims to attract outstanding students in the world to pursue their PhD degree programmes in Hong Kong’s institutions.
Host Institution(s):
The HKPF supports the awardees to pursue their PhD studies at seven UGC-funded institutions in Hong Kong:
• City University of Hong Kong
• Hong Kong Baptist University
• Lingnan University
• The Chinese University of Hong Kong
• The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
• Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
• The University of Hong Kong
Field of study:
Applicants should choose a PhD programme from the institution(s) and department(s) selected, unless otherwise specified. For details of PhD programmes offered by individual institutions, please refer to their respective websites (links found below).
Number of Awards:
135 PhD Fellowships will be awarded for the 2010/11 academic year.
Target group:
International students wishing to study in Hong Kong.
Scholarship value/inclusions:
The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (approximately US$2,600) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year for a maximum period of three years.
Eligibility:
Those who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in UGC-funded institutions of Hong Kong, irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.
Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability/ potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.
Selection Criteria:
While the academic excellence is of prime consideration, the Selection Panels will take into account, but is not limited to, the four yardsticks below for the selection of candidates:
• Academic excellence
• Research ability and potential
• Communication, and interpersonal skills
• Leadership abilities
Application instructions:
Each applicant may choose up to two programmes in one or two institutions for PhD study when applying for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship. Application should be made through the On-line Application System (OAS). The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship application is also regarded as a formal application for admission to the PhD programme(s) offered by the institution(s) concerned. Applicants are therefore required to fully comply with the admission requirements of their selected institutions and programmes.
The application deadline of the scheme is 1 December 2009 (23:59 hrs, Hong Kong Time.)
